Source: Variety, February 14, 2006
Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes is coming aboard to produce the 11th outing in the sturdy "Friday the 13th" franchise for New Line Cinema, reports Variety.
The studio is hoping to fast-track the project -- centered on the origins of the Jason Voorhees character -- so that the film can be released three weeks before Halloween on Friday, Oct. 13. Bay will produce with Platinum Dunes partners Brad Fuller and Andrew Form.
New Line's hired Mark Wheaton (Son of the Morning Star, The Messengers) to write the script.
Platinum Dunes, which Bay launched in 2001 as a low-budget horror specialist, produced New Line's 2003 remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and its upcoming Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning.

Bryniarski Rumor Put to Rest, Who Will Be Jason?
Over the past few days Andrew Bryniarski, who plays Leatherface is Platinum Dunes' Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake and its upcoming prequel Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, has been putting out word that he think he'd be a perfect fit for Jason in the next Friday the 13th film. We decided to drop word into the Dunes' base and see what they had to say about it, here's the skinny from Brad Fuller, "we love and admire Andrew's work as Leatherface, but we are going in a different direction with Jason." Expect more announcements soon, such as who will direct the pic. The next Jason pic, which will feature some of his origins, is shooting for an October 13th, 2006 date, which is ultimately unrealistic. (Bloody Disgusting)

Clarkson Rumor FALSE, Casting Hasn't Even Begun Yet
Last night it was reported that Patricia Clarkson (The Woods) was in talks with New Line Cinema to take on the role of Pamela Voorhees in the re-invisionment of Friday The 13th -- we've got word that this is completely not true. We checked in with Platinum Dunes about the rumor and got this response, "If that were the case I would consider myself a very lucky producer. Nonetheless, there is NO truth to that rumor at all. In fact we haven't even starting speaking about casting yet." The remake, which is written by Mark Wheaton and will be directed by Jonathan Liebesman, will incorporate components of the films, though it is known that Jason will wear the mask and will kill. The setting will be that of the first movie, Crystal Lake... (Bloody Disgusting)

Jason Voorhees Returns on 'Friday the 13th' 2009
November 16, 2007 @ 12:07am | Source: Paramount Pictures
Get ready for the best Valentine's Day present a horror fan could ever receive... Bloody-Disgusting was informed that Paramount Pictures will release Platinum Dunes' Friday the 13th remake in theaters on February 13, 2009. I know it's a long haul, but that's about a year from the start of production. Watch for heavy coverage here on B-D in the coming year. Marcus Nispel is set to direct off a script by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift. Word has it the remake will be a modern telling of Jason Voorhees, who already rocks his infamous hockey mask.

...und so wird er losgehen, der Film:
Remaking Friday the 13th is actually more complicated than you might think. After all, there's no Jason Voorhees in the first film - his mom is the killer. And there's no hockey mask until Part III. It took until Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter for the classic Jason look and mythology to be really finalized. So what do you do when attempting to make a 21st century version? Do you really remake the first, with Mrs. Voorhees as the killer? How do you deal with the now cliched aspects of the slasher genre? Do you even need to bring back any elements from the original films, or do you just do a reboot?
I talked about this with the Platinum Dunes guys, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller, last year when they were promoting The Hitcher. They were still working these issues out, but with the movie shooting in February, they've obviously hammered them out.
And I know how.
The new Friday the 13th is going to open with Jason as a legend in the Crystal Lake area. Five kids out in the woods looking for a bunch of weed they planted and stumble upon the deserted Camp Crystal Lake. Sitting around the fire that night, the dweeby one (there's always a dweeby one) tells the legend of Jason Voorhees. After that the Survivor Girl and her boyfriend wander off into the woods, where they find a shitty old cabin. Inside are some clues, like a bed with the name Jason carved in it. An old picture of a girl who looks just like Survivor Girl.
And Mama Voorhees' head.
Cue Jason. He murderizes the other four kids, and as he grabs Survivor Girl... slam into the opening credits.
This sounds like a terrific way to revive the series. We get right to the point, and it opens damn strong. From there the movie essentially becomes a rehash of the first four movies, but who is going to complain about that? One of the big changes is that the script attempts to explain some of Jason's supernatural aspects - the script goes out of its way to specify that he's a human being, not a zombie or a superman - including revealing that our favorite hockey masked killer has a series of hidden tunnels under the woods and the old camp, which is what allows him to pop up at the most inopportune moments.
As a die-hard fan of the series, I have to say that I like what I am hearing. Friday the 13th was never great cinema, and the sequels bastardized the concept worse than Platinum Dunes could ever hope to do.
Bring it on! 😁
