Both Director Louis Leterrier and Jason Statham intentionally wanted an R-rating for this film rather than the PG-13 rating of the first film. However, 20th Century Fox stepped in and asked Leterrier to cut/censor the film for a PG-13 rating. This is a list of what had been removed/altered:
-When Lola kills Dr. Koblin, he is clearly seen being shot in the front with multiple bloodsquibs instead of just the rear view used in the PG-13 cut.
-Lola's "wet top" during the doctor's office shootout had to be digitally blurred so it didn't appear completely sheer.
-The two cops Lola shoots down after the doctor's office attack were originally shown being shot similar to Dr. Koblin, but the only evidence now comes from a few blood drops on the windshield of the police car.
-The Fight with Max was slightly longer with various bloody shots including a shot of blood flying into the camera when Max is uppercut by Frank. Also, Max says *beep* several times during the fight.
-The scene in which Frank kills Dimitri by ripping off the top of his gun and jamming into the side of his neck was originally very graphic as opposed to the split second shot shown in the PG-13 cut. Not only is the piece shown going into his neck, but Dimitri is also shown gagging from it. Frank then rips the piece back out, causing Dimitri to fall over as shown in the PG-13 version. However, the PG-13 version digitally removed a stream of blood that squirted from Dimitri's neck as he falls over. However, the sound effect of the blood splattering on the floor is still present.
-A quick shot of a dying Dimitri is also shown right after Dr. Sonovitch is stabbed in the leg.
-When Sonovitch originally explains to Frank what the virus was by calling it a "recombinant retro-immune double-polymorphing efferent", Frank gets impatient and says "in simple *beep* English!". Sonovitch then continues, as in the PG-13 cut, by saying "the child will die".
-A full scene was removed explaining the disappearance of Sonovitch from the film. In the scene, Sonovitch finds Gianni and Lola waiting for the Helicopter and asks "where are we going?". Gianni responds by saying "We are going to Columbia, and you...", and shoots Sonovitch four times in the stomach (with a graphic back shot of Sonovitch as he's shot), then finishes with "...are not". Sonovitch then dramatically falls backwards into a pool.
-The garage fight in the finale was slightly longer with additional strikes, such as Frank breaking a henchman's leg, but most notably piercing a henchman through the chest (and out his back) with a long pipe. This also explains how Frank gets another gun since it came from this henchman rather than just randomly finding another gun on the ground.
-The last change comes from Lola's death. In the PG-13 cut, when she is shown pierced on the spiked wall, no blood is shown. However, in the original version, an alternate take was used in which blood is shown pouring out from her chest as well as a close up shot of her face with blood around her mouth.
Most of these shots are visible in either workprint form on the US DVD (strangely enough with no "unrated warning" like the DVD of the first film) or in the European trailers (French, German, etc). Director Leterrier has stated that he wants to work on a new DVD which will have all of these scene reinstated. It is rumored that the French DVD already features this cut, listed as "Non-Censuree" (Non-Censored), and that the upcoming UK DVD will feature this cut as well. While nothing official from Fox US has been stated, it is highly likely this cut will also receive a US release as an "unrated edition" even though it is an "R-equivalent" rather than an "NC-17 equivalent".
