Stand Alone Complex 'The Laughing Man' Movie HK DVD April 19th 2007
This is the movie will culls the central story of the 1st Gig of the Ghost in the Shell TV Series, discards the stories that surrounded it, and rather than just being an editing exercise it actually includes some footage that was re-animated to polish it up a little (show dates from 2001) and maybe some new stuff too, I think. Although I've mentioned the show to death, as have many, one thing remains : this is perhaps the only anime series I've seen which hits all the spots since the days of first seeing 'Akira' in the late 80's. It may be thickly plotted, but that's better than lightly plotted, that's for sure.
It's confusing by now, all these different variations on the releases, good sets (2nd GiG UK seems fine), bad sets (1st Gig UK set seems poor), reissued sets (Japan gets one soon - limited, includes the English dub), individual volumes and so on. With the 'Laughing Man' movie though, the only DVD until now has been unsubbed and issued in Japan (back in September 2005), of course, until Panorama pop-up and surprise us with a 2-Disc set stating a running time of 193 minutes; the Japanese DVD lists a running time total of 159 minutes.
There were listings (at one point; now disappeared) for this to appear in the UK, and I've lost track of any mention for a proposed USA release (can't even remember a mention of it), but for now the situation seems clear : this is the first official subtitled release of this for those of us whom are interested and speak English, not Japanese. Let's hope Panorama also release the movie culled from the central story to the 2nd Gig, 'The Individual Eleven'. Oh, and the true film, 'Solid State Society' has been mentioned for early July 2007 release in both the UK and the USA on DVD.
